A week ago, my little almost 3 year old girl asked me about differences in languages. Let me tell you before I continue sharing my story, that I've been living in Montreal for about 2 years now, with both my little ones. Before we came here, as so many of us do, my 7 year-old kid used to speak the Arabic language most fluently I dare to say. However, it's getting more and more difficult to keep the same acquisition rate, as before, now that we're settled here, in a French speaking country. But that's another story...
Now, to go back to my little 3 year-old girl. When she came here, she was barely speaking and walking. Now that she's been exploring life and discovering her "entourage" using, not only two but three languages, she's starting to become more and more aware of the language diversities.
So, a week ago, as we were playing in her room, out of no where, she said "c'est le chat! c'est en fançais! Isla (her daycare friend) dit cat. C'est en english? hein mum?". Now, before I answer, she started singing as if she didn't want me to answer...She already knew deep down the answer to that question!
Now, today, she asks me "mammaaaaaa, qu'est ce que Crème en anglais? et en arabe?".
That is that! She knows now that each item can be referred to differently in several languages. It's amazing how kids mind works, when early researchers speculated that toddlers can't have access to abstract thinking! Kids, as my little one, and most probably so many others, prove these researchers wrong each and every time ! :D
